Probiotics have long been a common folk remedy
for various intestinal ailments. Now these microscopic organisms
are under the research microscope to determine if they actually
work and why. Although the exact manner in which probiotics work
is not entirely clear, these helpful bacteria are believed to help
keep naturally occurring intestinal bacteria in balance. Probiotics
are naturally found in dairy foods such as yogurt, milk, and cheese
but are also available in health food stores as supplements. Probiotics
are currently used to help treat patients suffering from inflammatory
bowel disease. However, probiotics only exist in the intestines
for a short time after consumption, and so supplements must continually
be taken in order to experience any long-term benefits.
