Answer: The small shocks are no problem whatsoever, although they might be somewhat annoying. They are caused by the static electricity created when the spinning nylon roller brush contacts carpeting in dry weather. It is similar to when you scuff across carpeting in cold, dry weather and then touch a light switch. Not only is this shocking that you mention erratic as to when it occurs, but it will happen only with certain carpeting and when wearing certain clothing. The dusty odor is far less common and generally is due to the odor of the carpeting itself being absorbed into the bag material or into a filter or filters. One solution is to put an item such as "Carpet Fresh" on a small patch of carpeting and then vacuuming that into the machine. Another is to put just a drop of a fragrance or a quick spray with a "Glade-like" aerosol on the final filter to mask the odor, but remember to pick a fragrance that is pleasant to you and to use just a TINY amount. You just want to mask the carpet odor and not really create a strong new one. You can always add more fragrance, but you can't take it away easily. Bob
